Important points to note.

Hey guys,

This post is regarding the recent dip in attendance during training sessions. This has been a perennial problem and it has become rather tiresome to comment on.

Coach has some pointers for everyone:

1) Players in the recent Sunig squad, and those training with us prior to Sunig, are considered part of the NTU squad. Current training dates are only on Mondays and Fridays, and he expects full attendance on both days. If you don't think you can commit, or do not wish to continue training with us, please let it be known. If you choose to continue to be with the team, passion and commitment are both expected from you. (All players not in the current squad are welcomed to join us for trainings during this period)

2) In future, if you are unable to make it for training, inform through the blog stating your reason and your name(or some recognizable nick), or inform either Jin, Aaron or Weihao. If you are injured, you are still required to be down during training times for a light jog or gym training. This will be enforced through attendance taking, and Coach will monitor it closely: how many times you are missing with valid/invalid reasons.

3) Due to the combined uni training on wed and sat, trainings are now only twice a week. Our fitness level is evident through our Sunig games with the highest cramp rate among all 4 unis. Once again, you are expected to keep up your own fitness through jogging or gym work on other non-training days. You are encouraged to conduct such sessions with fellow teammates, for mutual encouragement and teambonding.

4) Lastly, as interhall games are coming up again, Coach has reiterated that your priorities should be clear: whether you want to play at the highest level representing NTU, or interhall games. you can still play for your hall, but this is referring to situations where trainings clash, or possible fatigue or injury from hall stuff. Exams are also nearing, do catch up on your work during non-training days, and we will have our usual break before the exams for you to have sufficient preparation time.

We have ended our Sunig on a high note, and let's carry on from here to up our game for IVP. Next week will be training on Monday and probably a friendly on Friday. In future we will be wearing Blue on Mondays and Red on Fridays. Do comment in the "Comment" function below to acknowledge this post. See you on Monday!

Cheers.

agree with everything said.. maybe for those who are not in the aug squad is a good thing to come down for hall trgs, so at least kick ball a bit during the 4 days break..

hey guys...i may have problems coming on friday's for the next 2 weeks as i have tests scheduled on the following mondays..AUG trg on saturday's doesnt make things better..those experienced pl advice.

Everyone starts on equal platform to make the team for the coming IVP. Regardless of attendance or effort during training, it is all up to yourself because down here, CCA is not a must and NTU soccer is definitely not just a CCA.

Well said Weihao.. NTU players are renowned for their drive and willingness to work hard and learn.. keep up that image...

action speaks louder than words...trg turnout has to improve..

shahril needs 1.5 hrs to travel home after training, and he is there every training.

many players have been attending training through their hall trainings, quizzes and injuries/sickness.

ppl prioritise things differently, and some can cope better than others, but i dun think it is fair to generalise that the players in the team are not committed, dont turn up for trainings and dun deserve their places.

it is understandable that some ppl really do have other commitments and cant turn up for training as often as others. injured players can do their bit to demo their commitment if they just come for light training or short session at/around the field. we are all adults and i believe we all know what can be done to help the team, if we are committed enough to the team

i juz want to make the point that good attendance is really essential bcoz training sessions are less effective and less fun when only a few ppl turn up, leading to low morale. It could even become a vicious cycle as more ppl might choose to skip training since its not useful enough. I also feel we need at least 2 keepers for every session or else training is juz not complete enough. So hopefully Tianci can come more often

I acknowledge this post! And agree that attandance in preseason is just as important as it is during the season. Now is the time to build up fitness and improve our basic skills.
In admit I have been lazy at turning up during my injury period and that is not a good example to others.

that's why I didnt want to comment.. all along I know everyone would just say all this..think when we generalise indicates that names are best not meant to be said.. Just to let everyone know. .

hi guys,
i acknowledge the post and i think that training attendance is really impt and apologies if i do not turn up at times. Now that training is only 2 times a week, trust me that i will be there.

I think Jerrard makes sense when he say that some players who may not have turned up as often are still registered in the team. I do not feel that it is wrong as selection should always be based on merit. What I do feel however is that, these players have to turn up for training and justify their selection. Only as such can the team improve as a whole.
Ultimately, a football team's result is often not based on the players they have, but how these players play as a team.

It's great to see you guys putting your commitment to the team. I'm looking at the names of the people who have responded and it is the same names you'll see at trainings all the time. You guys carry with you the NTU spirit and attitude that sets us different from other varsities.

I like what Ti Kor has said that selection is based on merit and these players have to justify their selection. All I'm pointing out is that their selection is not justified.

It is not important how I feel about the team, don't have to prove to me that the team has improved over the years. I have no doubt with the quality of players in the team that NTU can win trophies. Just here to feedback.

1) Poor attendance
How can it be that we can't get a proper number to train in the IVP team at this level? Is it the level of training is too high that scares people away or is it that the trainings have no value? Well, it seems that the solution is to make selection based on training attendance. That probably might not work because back to the point selection is based on merit.

2) What is the objective of training?
When somebody attends training outside of team trainings does that still consider as training? If a player for example misses a training because of AUG commitments is that acceptable?
AUG players train very hard and I know most the guys are pretty stretched with all the commitments. But what about the players not in AUG? There're ever trainings that clashes with AUG stuff and only a number of non-AUG players turn up, and because the numbers are low, training objectives do not seem to be met. And if a non-AUG player misses that training (in view that the training will be ineffective) that is not acceptable, but it is ok for the AUG player?

Why not let it be known the names of the players whom the training attendace is not satisfactory? Be fair to the committed who train so hard.

During the last edition of AUG, We had a team discussion about what we wanna do... Do we want to win President's Cup or just play AUG and other non-ivp related stuff.. Everyone present was not willing to come to a consensus on what they really wanted.. So in the end everyone was selfish for themselves. How did we do? We did not make it to the semis..

No matter what anyone says about AUG being more important, ultimately, soccer is a team sport and NTU is not judged by the number of players they provide for the AUG team but whether we are top 4 in the president's cup..

Tuan Anh here. Actually, i want to go trainning with all of u guys every week. But now i am having an thigh injure abt 1 more month. So i can only play futsal, can not play field :(.

For Vietnamese like me, playing futsal is an habit. Playing field is absolutely different. I have to run a lot, have to pass long ball, have to observe my teamates quickly. I want to imporve my skills on field but sometimes i use skills in futsal on field :(. But i'm very interested in trainning with NTU soccer team. It's not just CCA point, it's my hobby.

But next week i will come back for trainning. Just come for running and doing gym. When my injure is over, i will go trainning with u guy. C u guys tmr

hi guys, i apologise i will not be coming anymore. my timetable doesnt allow me to come on mondays, and fridays are usually for friendlies, so thats not right, to not train and play games. also the travel time back to tampines is really uninteresting. train hard and do NTU proud. cheers.

i've read and re-read many of the responses and comments of the posts, and i have to say that there are points that have been brought up that have been over-arching and in some cases, not reflective of certain fractions in the team.

I understand how some of you might see a direct correlation between attendance and commitment to the team. That may be true in secondary/JC, but in Uni, i think we need to sometimes take a step back and see the validity of this statement. on one hand, there is some truth, esp to those that do not have valid reasons for their absences. However, we should also apply some empathy to those that are unable to attend trainings due to injury. Yes, they CAN come down to do their light trainings and also to hit the gym for recovery and strength training. But let us not forget that in system that offers us the short 24hrs that we have, in addition to the ever surmounting amounts of assignments/projects/presentations etc that demands our time, attention and effort. We have to work hard as well as SMART in order to juggle the never-ending meetings/studying/tests that we have to face.

For some of us (myself, for example), since i am recovering from a knee injury, i find that i use alot of the breaks during lessons to hit the gym for recovery runs or/and strength training. This occurs in the afternoon or sometimes in the mornings. As such, training is not limited to just Mondays and Fridays. So, it is unfair to extend the equation: (Attendance = Desire + Commitment). Instead, there should be trust and acknowledgement that those that are interested are doing their best to get back in shape. At the end of it all, its what happens on the field thats most impt.

We all know what we have to do to earn a place. Its up to the individual. After all, in smart football, surely the coaches and the leaders in the team are flexible yet fair enough to make a just and informed decision?

Hey guys, i guess trainings are important and necessary in the sense that all teams have different playing styles and different definitions/roles of different positions.. Thus, training is for all of us to integrate into ONE TEAM with all of our individual skills picked up from previous experiences.. Certainly no player can say that he has reached his potential, so let's continue working hard on the field.. No doubt i haven't been coming down, and i apologize for that.. My 2 cents worth.. See you guys on the field! =)

Just so my point is not misunderstood:

I'm not against players who don't turn up for training and if you're 110% committed to the team in what ever way that's great.

I am however against the system. Want to come for training or not your responsibility. If turning up even when you're injured is your way of showing your commitment, good for you. It is the system that is flawed is all I'm pointing out.
